Housing Programs

Families or individuals that have fallen on difficult financial times in this troubled economy will be happy to know that there are many housing programs that can help them to get and maintain affordable housing that is decent, livable, and safe. Of course, finding the right affordable housing program, especially when there are so many to choose from and so many stipulations to be met, can be a bit of a challenge. It’s well worth it, however, when affordable housing is finally received.

Programs like the NACA Housing Program are considered low income housing programs. Generally to qualify for any housing program for low income families or individuals, a person and his or her entire household must have an average income that is lower than the average income for a family of the same size residing in the same general area. This is the standard put in place by federal housing programs, such as the HUD housing program, and even most private organizations choose to follow it, though there are some exceptions.

Some qualifying individuals and/or families will be placed into subsidized housing programs. What this means is that the government will pay for a specific part of the housing cost. Some government housing programs will allow the individual and/or family to choose the housing. Other affordable housing programs, however, will place the family or individual into specially designated government housing apartment complexes.

Certain other individuals who are not necessarily “low income” many qualify for specialty housing programs with the same or even more benefits. Veterans housing programs, for example, are available for those who have served in the armed forces. There are also special programs for the elderly, the mentally or physically disabled, or for single parents or victims of domestic violence. The best course of action for those interested in receiving help is to contact the local housing authority.
