What Is Special Education

The transition to modern society was characterized by changes in community’s attitude towards people with specific problems. Within groups and categories of persons with special needs, those marked by physical and mental disabilities are a separate entity requiring complex sociological, psychological and pedagogical services. Therefore, assistance to persons with special needs is a complex activity that includes: prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment, recovery, educational and vocational guidance, social integration and monitoring subsequent evolution of the person in distress. To achieve these goals is necessary to establish psychological, pedagogical, medical, legal and social teachers engaged in educating children with special needs. This kind of activities take place in institutions known as special education schools where children with learning disabilities are taught and formed in order to have a chance and integrate much faster in the society. Special education laws are restrictive and sustain a healthy development of children with disabilities.

Special education is known as a formal education for all children with special educational needs (SEN) who do not succeed alone, or is unlikely to succeed in achieving the appropriate level of education in the regular system. SEN means additional educational needs of the general learning objectives, an adapted education for every individual and their learning disabilities that require specific forms of intervention through rehabilitation or recovery. The fundamental principles underlying special education are: ensuring the right to education for every child and providing specialized services focused on the needs of children with SEN by providing educational complex activities and correlating the types and forms of education according to their needs. Children have the right to learn together, regardless of the difficulty and differences and the school community has to ensure equal access to education to all children. Every child is unique and has some potential for learning and development, including children with SEN.
